, the Spanish holiday hotspot, is a love-it-or-hate-it destination for many. But if you're seeking a more family-friendly or relaxed experience, don't write off this part of Costa Blanca just yet. Just a stone's throw away from the bustling Benidorm strip, known for its British-run cafes and the notorious Sticky Vicky, lies an undiscovered paradise.

Nestled between towering mountains and pristine waters, Altea is beginning to bask in the Spanish spotlight - and it's easy to see why. This charming city offers secluded beaches, a picturesque old town brimming with diverse eateries and shops, and a rich history. It's the ideal spot for those who want to dip their toes into the lively Benidorm scene for a day, but then retreat to a calmer environment away from the rowdy party-goers.

"This is probably my favourite little excursion to do from Benidorm - and Altea is only 15 mins away!" said travel account Benidorm Hidden Gems in a recent video. "Altea's beachfront has the MOST stunning sea view, you truly have to see the blue to believe it for yourself! "After you're done exploring the beautiful beach, head for Altea's Old Town. It's some climb by foot, but [is] so worth it for the view and a peek inside the Nostra Senyora del Consol church right at the top!" Scores of holiday lovers flocked to the comments section to share their views, with many tagging their mates for vacation ideas.

"I hope I will live there soon," one chuffed user penned. Another gushed: "It's a great place, my best holidays as a boy [were here]." A third chimed in: "I need to go," while a fourth labelled Altea as 'super beautiful'.

Just like Benidorm, the nearest airport to Altea is Alicante. Direct flights are available from most major UK airports, with return fares costing as little as £50 in September. If you're on the hunt for budget-friendly accommodation, hotels start as low as £65 per night - based on two sharing.
