Characterised by its outstanding natural beauty, including its golden beaches and pristine turquoise waters, it is far from being a tourist hotspot, making it the perfect location for a getaway into the peacefulness of nature. Part of the Chinijo Archipelago, the island is home to just 700 inhabitants, who nearly all reside in the village of Caleta de Sebo.

There is another village called Pedro Barba which lies a few miles away, although it is predominantly made up of summer homes, with just three permanent residents. function loadOvpScript(){let el=document.createElement('script');el.

Of course you can head to one of the islands’ many stunning beaches, such as Playa de las Conchas, where strikingly blue waters and white sands are framed against the breathtaking beauty of the red hues from the Montana Bermeja volcano.

However, the waves around these parts are strong, meaning one must be careful when taking a dip. If you are looking for a more party-orientated atmosphere, you can experience the celebrations of the Fiesta del Carmen, which takes place on July 16 and serves to honour the Patron Saint of fishing communities and mariners. There are also bike hire and boat trips available, the latter of which allows you to explore the unspoilt natural beauty of the Marine Reserve, where one can marvel at the area’s extensive flora and fauna, including a variety of bird species, along with 304 species of seaweed.

Lunch is usually included within this excursion, giving you a chance to taste the local cuisine. There is also a campsite, which is located just outside of the main village.

The island is also home to a school, restaurants, a supermarket, a pharmacy and a bank. It is accessible only by boat, but there are regular ferry lines from the port of Orzola on the northern coast of Lanzarote, which depart every half an hour.
