A female black bear attacked a 3-year-old girl Sunday night inside a tent at a campground near Red Lodge. The bear was shot and killed Monday by state wildlife wardens, according to the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks. FWP said the bear mauled and injured the child at approximately 10 p.

m. Sunday, Aug. 11, at a private campground.

A number of media outlets have identified the child as a three-year-old girl. She was transported to Billings for medical treatment. FWP said the private campground and traps and snares were set up to capture the bear.

“The bear was captured on the afternoon of Aug. 12, and was shot and killed. FWP found unsecured attractants, including garbage, a cooler, and human food, around and inside the tent where the attack occurred,” the state agency said in a statement on the incident.

FWP said the black bear involved in the attack did not have history of conflict with humans and the agency “believes the bear killed was the bear involved in the attack.”.
