Six people are still confirmed missing from the Bayesian yacht (Image: Getty ) A desperate search for the six people missing after a luxury £30million yacht was caught in a freak storm off the coast of Sicily was once again underway on Wednesday, as a new theory emerges as to why it sank so quickly. British tech tycoon Mike Lynch , his daughter Hanna, 18, Hiscox chairman Jonathan Bloom, his wife Judy, Chris Morvillo, a lawyer part of the legal team that represented Mr Lynch, and his wife Neda are all still unaccounted for. 15 of the 22 people on board were pulled to safety after the 56-metre vessel was caught in what is believed to have been a powerful waterspout tornado as it was moored off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, around 5am local time on Monday.

One man, a chef named as Recaldo Thomas, has been confirmed dead. function loadOvpScript(){let el=document.createElement('script');el.

A new theory has emerged the ship, which had the world's tallest aluminium mast, may have gone down so quickly in the storm due to hatches, portholes or doors possibly being open. Sailing expert Sam Jefferson, editor of magazine Sailing Today, said: "I would have said that the boat got hit very hard by the wind, it was pinned over on its side.

"I imagine all the doors were open because it was hot, so there were enough hatches and doors open that it filled with water very quickly and sank like that." Andrea Ratti, a nautical design professor at Milan Polytechnic University, said that a boat the size of the Bayesian would only sink so quickly by taking in a huge amount of water. He also suggested that portholes, windows or other openings may have been left open, letting in water.

Billionaire Mr Lynch, 59, and the others have yet to be found despite extensive searches of the sea after the superyacht they were on capsized and sank after being hit by a freak tornado off the coast of Sicily. Italian dive teams searching the wreck (Image: PA) 18 mins ago 08:07 Richard Ashmore What we know so far this morning The 184-foot luxury yacht the Bayesian owned by British tech tycoon Mike Lynch currently lies around 50 metres down on the seabed off the coast of the Sicilian fishing village of Porticello after it sank around 5am local time on Monday.

Local reports suggest a powerful storm and waterspout tornado may have hit the vessel. Of the 22 people on board, 12 crew and 10 passengers, 15 have been rescued. The six missing people are Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hanna, Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley and insurance company Hiscox, and his wife Judy, Chris Morvillo, a lawyer from Clifford Chance and his wife, Neda.

The body of a man was recovered near the yacht, believed to be that of chef Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan working onboard. The survivors, including Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, were rescued after escaping onto a lifeboat. Vincenzo Zagarola of the Italian Coastguard said the six missing tourists were feared dead.

Asked about their likelihood of being alive, he said: "Never say never, but reasonably the answer should be not." Italy's fire brigade Vigili del Fuoco said it developed a plan to enter the wreckage of Bayesian, which is resting on the seabed off the coast at a depth of 50 metres. It described the operation as "complex", with divers limited to 12-minute underwater shifts.

Firefighter divers reached parts of the vessel through the gap, Giornale Di Sicilia reported on Tuesday, but are yet to make it to the cabins. It's been suggest the Bayesian sank because its record-breaking 246-foot mast may have snapped, and hatches and portholes could have been opened allowing water inside quickly when the ship capsized.
