It always seemed like it was going to end soon, but it make the occasion no less sad. Following his departure from Liverpool FC after his contract at the club ended, Thiago Alcântara announced his official retirement from football. Immediately, Bayern Munich released an official statement on the club’s official website , in which the club commemorated, honored and thanked the erstwhile Bayern player for a beautiful career that enriched the footballing experience of anyone who had the privilege of witnessing it.

Though Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen was not in his current role when Thiago arrived from FC Barcelona , he coincidentally joined Munich in 2013, the same year the Spaniard arrived at the club. Therefore, it was rather fitting as Dreesen spoke, as captured by @iMiaSanMia , of both the impressive introduction to Thiago Bayern were treated to a decade ago and the even more impressive reputation he left behind: “Thiago was a key part of our team for seven years, and with him we won the Champions League in 2020. Pep Guardiola once said, ‘Thiago or nothing!’ - FC Bayern says at the end of his career: ‘Thiago can do anything!’ Thank you very much for a wonderful time together, we wish you all the best for the future.

A starting spot in our legends team is always reserved.” That last line is key. Though Thiago’s career may have ended, everyone at the club will hope that Thiago’s affiliation with the club will continue.

Whether as an ever present member of the legends team or even as a member of the Bavarians’ staff, there is hope that this is not the last we see of Thiago Alcântara do Nascimento at Bayern Munich.
