Zindagi has decided to remove its latest series, Barzakh, from YouTube Pakistan starting August 9. The decision follows widespread criticism since the show’s debut two weeks ago. Directed by Asim Abbasi, known for Churails and Cake, Barzakh has sparked controversy due to its provocative themes.
Despite the backlash, the first episode has garnered over four million views. The show features a star-studded cast, including Fawad Khan, Sanam Saeed, Salman Shahid, Khushhal Khan, Sajid Hasan, Uzma Beg, and Nighat Choudhry. Zindagi announced the decision on its official Instagram page, thanking fans for their support and explaining the reason for the withdrawal.
The statement read, “We, at Zindagi and Team Barzakh, extend our heartfelt gratitude to our global audience for their unwavering support for Barzakh — a show that was created to bring people together everywhere. But in light of the current public sentiment in Pakistan, we have decided to voluntarily withdraw Barzakh from YouTube Pakistan, effective August 9, 2024. This decision underscores our dedication to honoring our audiences without causing alienation.
We sincerely appreciate your understanding and continued support. Thank You.” Barzakh’s debut received mixed reactions.
Some praised its bold narrative and strong performances, while others criticized it for not being family-friendly and expressed discomfort with its content. Abbasi, addressing the backlash, said, “With all due respect, if you find queer/non-heteronormative storylines ‘distasteful,’ please do not watch my content.
