The historic St Mary’s Church in Aldworth hosts hugely popular ‘Teas with The Giants’ every Wednesday during the summer months. On September 11, visitors were surprised and delighted by the appearance of some members of Thames Valley Chorus (TVC) who filled the church with the harmonious music of their acclaimed barbershop sound. This was the ‘advance party’ to publicise an upcoming evening concert, when the TVC and organist Andy Grace will come together to present a programme of choral and organ music, showcasing the richness of both modern and traditional compositions.

The TVC, a well-known male voice ensemble based in Reading, will bring their distinctive barbershop style to the ancient 12th century church on October 19 (6pm). Known for their close harmony singing, the chorus will perform a variety of pieces, ranging from classical favourites to contemporary arrangements. Highlights of the evening will include moving renditions of classic choral pieces as well as lively arrangements of popular songs, demonstrating the choir’s versatility and broad appeal.

Adding another layer of musicality to the evening, renowned organist Andy Grace will play several solo pieces. Andy, a highly respected figure in the local music community, will showcase his mastery of the church’s Johannus organ with a series of well-chosen works spanning several centuries. The concert is the latest in a long-standing tradition of events organised to raise funds for the preservation of St Mary’s Church.

As well as fundraising, events at the church are a reminder of the importance of community, music, and heritage, bringing together people of all ages for a shared cultural experience. The acoustics of St Mary’s Church, renowned for their clarity, are sure to once again provide a perfect backdrop for the chorus’s rich harmonies and the music of the church organ, enhancing the overall experience. The church is sure that this concert will not only provide an evening of beautiful music but will also contribute to the ongoing efforts to preserve one of Aldworth’s most treasured landmarks.
