Friday, August 23, 2024 Banyan Tree, a prestigious name in the hospitality industry, has made its much-anticipated entry into Japan with the launch of Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto. Nestled in Kyoto’s historic Higashiyama Ward, this new hotel joins a collection of five sister properties in Kyoto, which include the Dhawa, Garrya, and Homm brands. Together, they offer guests an immersive experience into Kyoto’s rich cultural tapestry, enhanced by Banyan Tree’s signature hospitality.

Perched on a serene hilltop just steps from the iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto is hailed as a sanctuary for the senses. The hotel’s design merges traditional Japanese architectural elements with sophisticated modern amenities, inspired by the ethereal art of Noh theatre and the Japanese concept of yūgen, which embodies a profound, mysterious beauty. This fusion creates an atmosphere of elegance and quiet wonder.

The hotel’s architecture, conceived by renowned architect Kengo Kuma, seamlessly integrates with the natural beauty of its surroundings. Kuma’s design honors traditional Japanese building techniques while incorporating contemporary touches, resulting in a structure that harmonizes with the Higashiyama landscape. The façade, crafted from natural materials like cypress wood, reflects the timeless charm of Kyoto’s cultural essence.

Expansive windows and open spaces invite the tranquil beauty of the surrounding mountains and lush gardens to flow indoors, creating an immersive retreat where nature and tranquility blend effortlessly. Local artisans have revitalized the gardens and bamboo grove, enhancing biodiversity and showcasing traditional Kyoto craftsmanship. Interior designer Yukio Hashimoto has created guest rooms that blend traditional Japanese techniques with modern, natural elements.

Features such as large Hiba wood bathtubs, tatami mats, natural wood accents, and gold leaf details engage all five senses, offering a serene sanctuary. Rooms include panoramic views of Kyoto city and Onsen Retreat options with private Onsen baths overlooking either a tranquil garden or a serene bamboo grove and Noh Stage. Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto also offers exclusive cultural experiences, allowing guests to delve deeply into Kyoto’s traditional arts.

A highlight is a private visit to the studio of master artisan Ms. Mitsue Nakamura, where guests can witness the meticulous craftsmanship of Noh masks, a revered art form recognized by UNESCO as a World Intangible Cultural Treasure. This unique opportunity provides insight into the soulful artistry behind Noh masks and a rare chance to engage with a living tradition.

Additional cultural experiences include a private kōdō ceremony at the tranquil Sennyū-ji Temple, where guests can explore the ancient Japanese art of incense. This serene ritual fosters a profound sense of peace and spiritual connection. Together, these experiences offer an unparalleled journey into the heart of Japan’s artistic and cultural heritage.
