Located in the historic Higashiyama Ward of Kyoto, this exclusive retreat features 52 opulent guest rooms, the iconic Banyan Tree Spa, a natural Onsen, and two unique dining options. It stands out as the sole hotel in Kyoto equipped with a Noh stage.

“We are thrilled to introduce Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto, a Sanctuary for the Senses inspired by the quiet beauty Kyoto is so well known for,” said Philip Lim , Senior Vice President, Head of Regional Operations, Banyan Group. “This opening represents a significant milestone for our flagship brand in Japan, blending Kyoto’s rich heritage with the unparalleled luxury and service synonymous with the Banyan Tree brand. With five sister properties of Dhawa, Garrya and Homm located in Kyoto alone, we invite our guests to immerse themselves in the city’s cultural treasures while enjoying the unique hospitality from our distinctive brands.

” A Blend of Heritage and Innovation Perched atop a hill near the revered UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto masterfully merges classic Japanese design with contemporary sophistication, surrounded by a serene bamboo forest and the picturesque Higashiyama Mountains. The hotel draws inspiration from the subtle allure of Noh theatre and the concept of “yūgen,” which represents a profound and quiet beauty. This sanctuary is meticulously designed to foster an environment of elegance and contemplative beauty.

Architect Kengo Kuma has exquisitely designed the hotel to complement its natural setting, blending traditional Japanese construction methods with modern architectural elements. This integration results in a structure that resonates with the cultural aura of the Higashiyama area, using natural materials such as Cypress wood. The architectural design, featuring expansive windows and open layouts, allows the natural beauty of the external environment to permeate the indoor spaces, enhancing the calm and inviting atmosphere.

The restoration of the gardens and bamboo groves by local craftsmen not only supports local biodiversity but also showcases traditional Kyoto gardening skills. The interior design, led by Yukio Hashimoto, features rooms that harmonize traditional Japanese elements with modern aesthetics. Rooms are adorned with Hiba wood bathtubs, tatami mats, and touches of gold leaf, designed to stimulate the senses and create a tranquil refuge.

Guests can choose from rooms offering sweeping views of Kyoto or private Onsen Retreat rooms that overlook a lush bamboo garden or the unique Noh Stage. Culinary Excellence The Ryozen restaurant offers a refined Kappo-style dining experience for 48 guests, featuring a private dining area for up to ten. The menu, emphasizing kaiseki culinary art, celebrates sustainability and local sourcing, utilizing Kyoto vegetables, local miso, and specialty spices like Black-Shichimi.

The signature broth enriches the dishes with umami flavors, crafted from aged Rishiri kelp and a blend of bonito and tuna flakes. Bar Ryozen, an intimate venue with 20 seats, presents an exceptional selection of Japanese sake and creative cocktails. Highlights include Sake Tasting Sets with over 30 varieties, including exclusive labels, and unique cocktails infused with local flavors.

The bar also features a selection of rare Japanese whiskies. Reviving Wellness at Banyan Tree Spa The Banyan Tree Spa at Higashiyama Kyoto is a haven of holistic wellness, combining age-old Japanese therapeutic traditions with the refined techniques of Banyan Tree. The spa treatments, conducted in peaceful rooms equipped with Onsen baths and steam saunas, are designed to rejuvenate both mind and body.

Guests can also enjoy the communal Onsen baths, separated by gender, which utilize the restorative properties of natural hot springs. Engaging Cultural Encounters Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto offers its guests unique opportunities to delve into the rich tapestry of Kyoto’s cultural heritage through bespoke experiences. Guests can visit the workshop of Ms.

Mitsue Nakamura, a master Noh mask artisan, to witness the detailed craft that goes into making traditional Noh masks. This intimate experience not only provides insight into the artistic process but also connects guests with the enduring legacy of Noh theatre. Additionally, the hotel organizes private kōdō ceremonies at the tranquil Sennyū-ji Temple, where guests can explore the sophisticated Japanese art of incense, fostering a deep spiritual and peaceful connection.
