Tuesday, January 21, 2025 Bali’s villa rentals are a cornerstone of its tourism appeal, but they come with important regulations to ensure safety, legal compliance, and fairness. Villas must meet Indonesian safety standards, and businesses operating them are required to pay taxes in Indonesia and employ staff according to local laws to gain legal recognition. Amid concerns over the rise of illegally operated rental properties, the Bali Villa Rental and Management Association has taken steps to address the issue.

This increase in unregistered properties is seen as a potential threat to Bali’s long-term reputation as a premier tourist destination. The association has highlighted the risks posed by these unregulated operations. They argue that illegal rentals contribute to broader challenges faced by Bali’s tourism sector, including traffic congestion, waste management issues, and international perceptions of poor security.

Left unchecked, this problem could harm Bali’s standing in the global travel community. To combat these challenges, the association has proposed becoming the official body to verify rental villas in Bali. This solution includes collaborating with the Bali Tourism Office to establish a trusted booking platform where verified villas are listed.

Villas outside this verified list would be flagged as unsafe and not recommended for tourists. Another critical issue raised is the operation of illegal businesses accepting payments to non-Indonesian bank accoun.
