Tuesday, January 21, 2025 Balearic Islands launch a 22-boat fleet to boost maritime safety, enforce sustainability, and tackle rising tourism challenges for a secure coastal future. The Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle plans to expand its fleet with 22 new boats. Of these, 12 will be allocated to ports to meet operational demands, while the remaining 10 will focus on inspection and enforcement, particularly targeting yacht activity.

A new regulatory framework for nautical charter activities in the Balearics is currently open for public consultation, marking a significant reform in the sector. Minister Juan Manuel Lafuente emphasized that the initiative aims to enhance safety, promote sustainability, and address issues such as unauthorized operations and unfair competition within the industry. This action appears to be in response to a tragic incident near Cala Bona in August last year, where a yacht collided with a fishing boat, resulting in the death of 22-year-old Guiem Comamala.

Concerns over the growing number of vessels and insufficient oversight of tourism-related maritime activities have prompted calls for stricter control to ensure safety. Meanwhile, Menorca has emerged as a favored alternative for tourists. The island saw a staggering 341% increase in holiday searches this year, significantly outpacing Majorca and Ibiza.

Key factors behind this shift include budget-friendly holiday packages starting at around £300, affordable flight options, and Menorca’s reput.
