Saturday, November 9, 2024 National Flag Day in Azerbaijan, marked annually on November 9, was established by a presidential decree signed by President Ilham Aliyev on November 17, 2009. The Azerbaijani tricolor, symbolizing national identity, was first adopted as the national flag on November 9, 1918, by the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) government, which governed until May 1920. Upon regaining independence in 1991, the Azerbaijani Supreme Soviet reinstated the tricolor, with its eight-pointed star and crescent, as the official State Flag of the Republic of Azerbaijan on February 5.

In 2009, Article 105 of the Labor Code was amended to officially designate November 9 as National Flag Day, establishing it as a public holiday. The “State Flag of the Republic of Azerbaijan” law details the flag’s design and significance. The national flag of Azerbaijan, representing the country’s independence, features three horizontal stripes of equal width: blue at the top, red in the center, and green at the bottom.

Centered within the red stripe, a white crescent and an eight-pointed star appear on both sides of the flag. On September 1, 2010, President Ilham Aliyev officially opened National Flag Square in Baku, following a decree he signed on November 17, 2007, to establish this landmark. Notably, the flag displayed there is one of the largest globally, weighing over 500 kilograms, measuring 36 meters wide, and extending 72 meters in length.
