Australia’s athletes are eyeing history in Paris after an amazing start to the Olympics for the national team. While appearing on the Today show on Tuesday, Meares said she is immensely proud of what the team has achieved so far as Australia sits fourth in the medal tally - but she found it too emotional to re-watch highlights of the Games so far as Nine aired a promotional package just before her interview began.

'It's hard enough to watch this live and to be around the athletes as they are exiting the village and coming back,' she told hosts Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo. 'But it is magnified when you add the narration and the music. I couldn't watch it.



' Meares, Australia’s greatest-ever female cyclist, admits she first broke down in tears at the Games when cyclist Grace Brown blitzed her opponents to claim the nation's first gold in the women's time trial. 'I got really emotional when Grace won our first goal in cycling. That was a little heartwarming moment,' said the six-time Olympic medallist.

'And I lost my composure with Jess (Fox) at the canoe slalom course.' Australian Team Chef de Mission Anna Meares (pictured) couldn't contain her emotions during her appearance on the Today show on Tuesday Meares said she has shed tears a few times while watching the Aussies win medals - but there's one type of footage from Paris that she can't bear to watch Fox has won two gold medals at the Games, defending her Olympic title, and in doing so has become the most successful individual medallist in Aussie Olympic history. Fox's sister Noemie joined her sister on Monday as an Olympic champion by winning the kayak cross.

'I was in my room watching Noemi this afternoon just going off my nut, just screaming,' admitted Meares. 'You cant script this stuff. That's what's so beautiful about it.

' Meares (pictured with Queen Mary) says she is proud of how the Aussies are performing Your browser does not support iframes. Meares is guiding 460 Aussie competitors from 33 different sports over the course of the Olympics and is happy with how her team has been performing so far. 'If in some small way we have contributed to these performances.

.. then that's our gold medal,' she said.

Stefanovic thanked Meares for her hard work and told her that she was an 'extraordinary person' who'd dedicated her life to the Games and must be missing her daughter as she works in Paris. It was all too much for the Olympics boss, who broke down in tears as he complimented her. 'Thank you.
