SANGER — A tough nondistrict slate led to plenty of ups and downs for the Aubrey volleyball team earlier this season, but it's rounding into form at the right time. The Lady Chaparrals remained unbeaten in District 9-4A play with Tuesday's 3-0 sweep of local foe Sanger.
Aubrey (21-11, 5-0 in district) has rolled through its first five district matches of the season with wins against Gainesville, Lake Dallas, Frisco Panther Creek and Van Alstyne prior to Tuesday's triumph over Sanger (16-17, 1-4). The Lady Chaps have dropped just one set in that span during last Friday's four-set victory over Van Alstyne. Aubrey had lost its last four matches heading into district, including clashes with state-ranked squads Melissa and Ponder.
That stretch epitomizes the challenges Aubrey faced throughout nondistrict play, which coach Whitney Stout said have helped her team evolve to the point it's now reached. "Obviously our preseason was tough, and we took that to heart," Stout said. "We focused on learning from those experiences and talked about putting it into play.
If we didn't put it into play, did we really learn anything? They've done a really good job of being focused, talking, the communication. "Our volleyball IQ has gone up a ton, so it's been really fun to them start putting it into play.
