Jaipur: The increasing incidents of stone pelting on vehicles in the tribal regions of Banswara and Dungarpur have raised serious concerns among travellers. The attacks , occurring on state and national highways, have made journeys, especially at night, risky. Recent police investigations indicate that most of the incidents are carried out by local youths with the intention of robbing.

On Saturday night, another such incident occurred on Chiwana Road in Banswara. A group of 8 to 10 men attacked a car driven by Sonu Chauhan, a resident of Barodiya village in the Bagidora area. The attackers hurled stones at the vehicle, shattering its rear windshield.

Fortunately, Chauhan escaped unharmed and later recounted the terrifying experience to local residents, who expressed growing anxiety about the increasing frequency of the attacks. Just a day earlier, on Friday, a couple travelling home from Udaipur found themselves under attack near Kareta village in the Arthuna area of Banswara. The youths involved in the attack pelted the couple’s car with stones.

The couple narrowly escaped by speeding away and immediately reported the incident to the police. Swift action from law enforcement led to the arrest of four youths and the detention of two minors. The issue came into spotlight recently when the car of BAP MLA Jaikrishn Patel was attacked on August 15.

Despite the police promptly arresting the attackers, the incidents continue unabated. According to a police official involved in the case, the attackers had attended a public meeting organised by Banswara MP Rajkumar Roat. After the meeting, they consumed alcohol and decided to rob vehicles passing through the area.

The attack on MLA Jaikrishn Patel’s car on August 15 further highlighted the severity of the issue. The attackers, who confessed to pelting stones with the intention of robbing the car's occupants, were quickly arrested by the police. The incidents have prompted Banswara SP Harsh V Agarwalla to launch a campaign against power bikes in the area, which are often used by these youths during such crimes.

Over the past month, hundreds of bikes have been seized for violating traffic rules, including lacking registration plates, driving without licences, speeding, and not wearing helmets. “One of the objectives of this campaign is to crack down on anti-social elements involved in the stone pelting incidents,” said SP Agarwalla.
