As I sit here reminiscing about my childhood adventures in Kathmandu, one memory stands out vividly, climbing the old Dharahara tower. Before it tragically collapsed in the 2015 earthquake, this iconic structure was more than just a historical monument, it was a cherished part of our lives. The feeling of ascending its spiralling staircase, the anticipation building with each step, and the breathtaking view from the top are etched in my mind.

The old Dharahara was a beacon of hope, resilience, and cultural pride, a place where generations gathered to admire the beauty of the Kathmandu Valley. The tower, originally built in the 19th century, was a stunning example of Nepali architecture, its nine stories reaching towards the sky. I remember the joy of reaching the top, the wind tousling my hair, and the panoramic view unfolding before me.

From that vantage point, I could see the bustling streets of Kathmandu, the sprawling gardens, and the majestic Himalayas in the distance. Each visit felt like an adventure, a journey into history that connected me with my ancestors who had gazed upon the same landscape. When the earthquake struck, the loss was profound.

The collapse of Dharahara wasn’t just the destruction of a building, it was the shattering of a communal space that held countless memories. For many of us, it was a symbol of our heritage, a reminder of the resilience of the Nepali people. The outpouring of grief was palpable, as we mourned not only the physical structure but also the experiences and connections it fostered.

However, amidst this sorrow, there was hope. The rebuilding of Dharahara became a rallying point for our community. It represented not only the restoration of a landmark but also the revitalisation of our spirits.

The efforts to reconstruct the tower reflected our determination to rise from the rubble and reclaim our history. The new Dharahara, completed recently, stands as a testament to our resilience. It has been meticulously designed to honour the original while incorporating modern safety measures, ensuring that it can withstand the challenges of nature.

As I anticipate my first visit to the new Dharahara, I find myself filled with a mix of excitement and nostalgia. I can’t wait to once again to go to the top of new Dharahara to feel that familiar rush as I ascend toward the sky. This time, however, it will be different.

The new structure will offer an opportunity not only to enjoy the view but also to reflect on our journey as a community. It will remind us of the strength we displayed in the face of disaster and the unity we forged in rebuilding what was lost. The experience of the new Dharahara will be about more than just the view, it will be a tribute to our past and a celebration of our future.

I envision families gathering, just as we did, sharing stories of the old tower and creating new memories atop the rebuilt one. It will serve as a reminder of our collective resilience and the importance of preserving our heritage. In a way, the new Dharahara encapsulates the spirit of Kathmandu, a city that has weathered storms, both literal and metaphorical, yet continues to rise with grace and strength.

As I look forward to the day I can stand at the top once again, I am reminded that while the old Dharahara may be gone, its legacy lives on in our hearts and in the stories we continue to share. This new chapter promises to be just as unforgettable, as we climb once more, together..
