Monday, August 12, 2024 The Australian Travel Industry Association backs Rod Sims’ aviation reform call, highlighting data that shows the need for a fairer market and better consumer outcomes. The Australian Travel Industry Association (ATIA) supports former ACCC Commissioner Rod Sims’ call for aviation reform, citing data that shows the necessity for a fairer market and improved consumer outcomes. ATIA commissioned a thorough study led by former Qantas economist Tony Webber, which analyzed two decades of data and revealed a pattern where airlines frequently cancel flights for commercial reasons, adversely affecting the travel industry and consumers.

Key Findings from the Research: Airlines can continue cancelling flights without losing valuable airport slots due to the 80-20 rule, which allows them to retain a specific timeslot as long as they don’t cancel more than 20% of flights in that slot over the year. In light of these findings, the Australian Travel Industry Association (ATIA) is calling for immediate action and reforms in the aviation sector to address these issues, ensuring the sustainability and growth of Australia’s travel and tourism industry..
