Pune: With a monthly total of 269.8mm (till 5.30pm on August 27), Pune is experiencing its wettest August since 2014, India Meteorological Department ( IMD ) data has revealed.

This comes with four days still remaining in the month, indicating the possibility of further rainfall . TOI had earlier reported that till August 24, Pune had already recorded its wettest August in four years, with 203.8mm rainfall.



By August 27, this figure had gone up by 66mm, showing a significant increase in precipitation over just three days. An expert from Vagaries of Weather Blog said, "The showers in the last few days have added more to this quantum, taking August's total to 269.8mm.

Shivajinagar has also crossed 915.8mm during the entire monsoon season so far (till 5.30pm on Tuesday), making this the wettest June-July-August period in Pune at least since 2012.

Monsoon intra-seasonal oscillation (MISO) provided favorable conditions for the current active spell in Maharashtra." MISO refers to the sub-seasonal variability in the monsoon system, which can influence periods of enhanced or suppressed rainfall. This year's August rainfall marks a substantial rise compared to recent years.

In August 2023, the monthly total was a mere 42mm, while in the same month in 2022, it was 164mm. August 2021 recorded a mere 41.0mm, while August 2020 saw 255.

0mm in 2018, and 162.2mm in 2017. An IMD official said, "The city experienced good rainfall in the first week of August, followed by a reduction in rain.

However, convective showers resumed later, significantly contributing to the overall total and making up for the shortfall in the earlier period."
