Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman will miss all three games of a weekend home series against the Chicago White Sox with a right elbow injury. Bregman underwent an MRI on Friday that showed no structural damage with the team electing not to put the veteran on the injured list for now. The Astros recalled infielder Shay Whitcomb from Triple-A Sugar Land, while infielder Aledmys Diaz was released from the active roster, according to the club.

Whitcomb, 25, was a fifth-round draft pick in 2020 who is set to make his major league debut after batting .293 with 25 home runs and 91 RBIs in 108 games at Triple-A. Bregman, 30, is batting .



261 this season with a .763 OPS that is the lowest of his nine-year career. He has 19 home runs and 59 RBIs in 116 games.

A two-time All-Star and career .273 hitter, Bregman has 184 home runs and 647 RBIs in 1,082 games, all with the Astros. Diaz, 34, played in a combined 14 games with the Astros and Oakland Athletics this season, going 3-for-33 with two runs scored.

The nine-year veteran is a career .259 hitter with 78 home runs and 294 RBIs in 705 games. In first place in the American League West, the Astros will play host to a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox after the White Sox leave town.
