There is also no dandruff or flakes. Her scalp looks red and there are spots of blood in places. We have tried different shampoos — chemical free, etc, but nothing seems to work.
She did spend a lot of the summer in swimming pools and in the sea but the problem precedes that also. What do you think this could be and should we see her GP? Dr Grant replies: There are a few things you could try at home yourself before seeing a doctor. It seems like your daughter has a very sensitive scalp.
Does she or anyone else in her family has a history of psoriasis or eczema? Are you sure there are no other areas on her body affected or is it just her scalp? Firstly, try the shampoo and conditioner by either Boots own brand or Elave products formulated specifically for sensitive skin. Secondly, if someone in her family of first degree relatives (parents or full siblings) has psoriasis then try use Nizoral antifungal/antidandruff shampoo twice per week. You need to build this into a lather on her scalp and leave in place for three minutes before rinsing out of her scalp and hair.
