Until the weekend's update, Asiana Airlines had scheduled a daily Airbus A380 service to Los Angeles International Airport next summer, although it probably never intended to operate just this. According to its latest filing, it now plans a double daily superjumbo service , returning what it offered this year. As the A350-900 will be replaced, daily roundtrip seats for sale will rise by nearly a quarter (23%) to 1,980.
As the A380 is the carrier's only equipment with Business Suites (a private room with a door), the number available has doubled. While Asiana flew the quadjet to New York JFK until 2019, Los Angeles remains the only US airport to see the type. Cirium Diio says Asiana serves the 5,209 nautical mile (9,647 km) route double daily. In November 2024, all flights are on the 495-seat A380, with one flight to be operated by the 311-seat A350-900 between December 1, 2024, and March 2, 2025. While the carrier had already scheduled a twice-daily double-decker quadjet operation from March 3, it was only bookable until the month's end.
Now, it has been extended through the summer. In the year to July 2024, the Seoul-Los Angeles point-to-point market comprised 553,000 roundtrip passengers. It was by far South Korea's largest US market and double the size of Seoul-San Francisco.
