After playing wide receiver last season, junior Branon Mitchell has now started five games as the starting quarterback.
Suddenly, the offense is humming along in midseason form with a scoring onslaught in Friday’s 50-12 home demolition of the North Vermilion Patriots. “Our passing game, it’s been on and off recently, but we’re finally starting to use our receivers a little more and getting the ball in our hands,” junior receiver Andrew McCormick said. “We found it tonight and we saw that it worked really well, so we kept on doing it.
” Mitchell and McCormick wasted no time displaying the progress that’s been made with a 55-yard connection on the Blue Gators’ first play from scrimmage to set up Andrew Abshire’s 4-yard touchdown run on the next play. “I really didn’t know where we’d get this season,” Mitchell said. “I just came into the season game by game and see how we’d do.
I just hoped we’d do better and better each week and we have. I think we’ve been doing better and better.” It certainly looked smooth Friday for the Blue Gators (5-0).
Mitchell threw for 192 yards on 7-of-8 passing with two scores, in addition to rushing for 153 y.
