An antiques expert has returned to Edgworth to give free valuations on family heirlooms. Despite poor weather, antiques owners flocked to The Barlow on Sunday, September 15, to have their wears evaluated. Irita Marriott, known for her appearances on the BBC’s Antiques Road Trip and Bargain Hunt, carried out the valuations for lucky visitors.

John Marriott, who is a trustee at The Barlow, said Irita enjoyed the day so much she’s already asked to come back again. John said: “She’s a lovely girl – she’s really friendly, everybody was really happy with her.

“Even if she wasn’t doing an auction she’d explain where it’d come from – she’d give so much information and she had so much for time for people which was really good – they really appreciated it.” Possessions including silver, military items, jewellery, gold, and porcelain were all brought in for valuation. This time around, John even brought two items to be evaluated himself – a fighter pilot’s helmet from the Second World War, and a football signed by players at Bradford City who were there on the day of a terrible stadium fire in 1985, which left 56 people dead and hundreds injured. John said Irita was "really pleased" with both the items. Irita is set to come back to The Barlow again next year, with a date yet to be set for the visit.

John hopes the events will increase public awareness of the venue and what it has to offer. The Barlow includes a playground and a bowling green at its centre, as well as a gym, wine bar , cricket club, and cafe. If you have a story, I cover the whole borough of Bolton.
