The unresolved civic issues have been plaguing citizens and resulting in flash floods in many areas adjoining Nagar Road in the recent past. The heavy spell of rain around 4 pm disrupted daily routine.

The waterlogging caused heavy traffic congestion between Yerawada and Vimannagar. Chairperson of Team Swachh Kalyaninagar (TSKN) Rachana Agarwal said, “Long-term solutions need to be explored to avoid repeated waterlogging. This is global warming and its ill-effects.

” The waterlogging problem has reared its head the fourth time this monsoon, when streets were flooded with waist-deep water and rainwater inundated many housing societies. Citizen Sanket Galande said, “Over the last decade, no new and bigger pipelines have been placed. Inhabitation has increased, but infrastructure has not improved.

Stormwater lines are the same and unable to drain rainwater after heavy showers. Experts and civic officials need to analyse the issue and decide how to deal when situations like cloudbursts arise.” TSKN member Drayson Dixon said, “Waterlogging is due to cloudbursts resulting in flash floods.

Pune’s storm drainage system was not originally built to cope with such deluges. Additionally, patch-work roads do not have proper slopes. Other reasons include garbage and cables clogging drains.

” Sahebrao Dandge, superintending engineer of PMC’s road department, said they would inspect with a team of the civic drainage department to understand the reasons behind waterlogging. “We will check whether drainage lines and stormwater chambers are choked, if there are obstacles in water flow or if there is a fault with the road alignment,” Dandge added. Hemant Sonawane, executive director of MahaMetro, said necessary assistance would be extended to the civic body to clear waterlogging.

“MahaMetro has not erected any barricading or done construction works that could be an obstruction. However, our teams will check and initiate measures with PMC to prevent accumulation and ensure flow of rainwater,” Sonawane added.
