Residents have objected to plans to build a 69-bed care home near Bursledon Windmill because it is “too large” and could cause more traffic. Around 80 objections have been submitted to planning chiefs at Eastleigh Borough Council about the scheme. It is due to be built on around one hectare of former allotments and gardens on the border of the grade II*-listed windmill, which dates from 1741.

READ MORE: Bursledon Windmill closed to the public due to financial difficulties Following initial complaints about the plans, submitted by Colten Care in May 2023, the amount of beds were cut from 73 to 69 and the layout was changed to preserve neighbours' views. On site, there would be 34 car parking spaces, five of which would be for the cottages, as well as cycle parking. In her objection, resident Emma Church said that the care home would add more congestion and pollution and have a “negative impact” on the surrounding area and community.

Miss Church said: “The A27 is already severely congested during periods of the day and when the M27 is closed. A property of the size planned will cause even more congestion and add to the noise pollution of the area.” She added that the care home would impact an already “overwhelmed” sewage system and harm wildlife.

“Bursledon was known for having lovely trees and associated wildlife. This construction will destroy the habitat for many wild birds and small animals," she said. Neighbour Jeffery Mannion said that the development is “too large,” not well located, and will create more traffic", adding: “This is not the place to put a care home.

As stated before, put it in the old Bursledon Hospital grounds, as it is far more suitable for a residential care home." Louise Brown added: “Having lived on the A27 for 28 years, I have seen a dramatic increase in traffic congestion, noise, pollution and dangerous issues arising from the traffic generated by the overdeveloped building that has taken place in this area and neighbouring localities. “The size of this proposed building is overwhelming.

I do not think any consideration has been given to the outlook, noise levels, and privacy of neighbours in Providence Hill or residents in Goslings Turning. “This building will be completely out of character with the surrounding areas of natural beauty, and I feel this site will harm the character and appearance of the Bursledon Windmill Conservation Area and listed buildings, including the Bursledon Windmill.” The borough council’s planning committee is set to make a final decision on November 21.
