Sport Don't miss out on the headlines from Sport. Followed categories will be added to My News. An Aboriginal Corporation’s request that a small town surf club in NSW pay to hold surf events and ocean swims has angered locals and club members.

The Courier Mail reports Yamba Surf Lifesaving Club on NSW’s Far North Coast was asked by the Yaegl Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation to pay a $500 “fee for service” each for four events including a nippers carnival during the 2024-25 lifesaving season. According to the corporation, the payment was to conduct ‘Welcome to Country’ ceremonies at the events at Yamba’s Main Beach. Watch the World Surf League Tour LIVE and FREE on Kayo Freebies.



Register free now, no credit card required. The club wrote to the corporation making a formal request to use Yamba’s Main Beach for the surf carnival and ocean swim. In 2017, the Yaegl people became the first Indigenous people in NSW to be granted native title over the ocean.

The native title claim covered 90km of coastline between the towns of Woody Head and Wooli and extended 200m out to sea. The surf club said the annual Yamba Ocean Swim in January was the only fundraising event that took place on the beach, but it also sought permission to run a surf boat carnival, a nippers carnival and a masters carnival.
