This weekend, the annual Toronto International Film Festival hosted a number of starry film premieres. (See all of the best fashion moments here .) One such film screening that drew an A-list crowd? Ron Howard’s new thriller Eden , starring Ana de Armas, Jude Law, Sydney Sweeney, and Vanessa Kirby, all of whom made a cameo on the step and repeat.
“I love being at TIFF,” de Armas told Vogue yeaterday, the day of the screening. “The audiences are such cinephiles, and I am so glad they got to experience Eden on the big screen.” In the new film, a group of people aim to build a better future by leaving everything behind and creating a new life on the harsh landscape of the Galapagos.
When de Armas read the script, she was instantly hooked. “I never thought I’d have the chance to work with Ron, so I was thrilled when he called me to offer me this opportunity,“ says de Armas. “Getting on the phone with him, and hearing his passion and about the journey of trying to make this movie for 15 years, was absolutely contagious and a no brainer.
” Her character—a mysterious one, named simply the Baroness—was another selling point; The actor was ready for the challenge to create a whole backstory for her. “I read the story and met the Baroness—I felt I had something really special in my hands,” she says. “The Baroness is a character with many layers and contrasts.
Underneath, she is a very fragile, nervous and paranoid woman. I can’t say more than that!” If de Armas had fun crafting her character, she also had fun creating a fashion character for the big premiere last night. With stylist Samantha McMillen, the duo landed on a Louis Vuitton dress that nodded to her screen character’s elevated sensibility.
“We wanted the dress to be effortless and fun,” says de Armas. “Nicolas [Ghesquiere]’s dress was playful, and the jewelry by Francesca Amfitheatrof was luxurious and beautiful. Jewelry fit for a Baroness—I loved it all so much!” Retro-glam hair by Jenny Cho, makeup by Melanie Inglessias and a spritz of Beautiful Magnolia by Estée Lauder completed the glamorous look.
“The [fragrance] bottle also matched my dress! Felt like a happy coincidence!” Post-TIFF, the actor has a slew of movie premieres to look forward to. Next up, she will begin her press tour for Ballerina , the forthcoming action flick in the John Wick universe co-starring Keanu Reeves. “I am very excited about it.
The film and all the additional photography we shot at the beginning of this year is really epic,” she hints. “I think there’s a trailer coming out soon. I can’t wait for people to see it!” Below, a closer look inside de Armas’s Toronto premiere.
