Zion Lutheran Church near Pickrell will be celebrating the “Spirit of Zion” later this month as a part of its150th anniversary. 1975 to 2024 will be the period observed for the third and final event of the anniversary celebration. The celebration committee is focusing on members who have served the church for many years.

Alnora Daubendiek has been an organist at the church for 67 years. She said she started playing when she was 15 years old. “I always think of the people that came to choir practice,” she said.

“Some of them came for 50 years. When you go that many years meeting people every Monday night, they are like family.” The men’s choir has been the backbone of the church music program.

Daubendiek started playing piano when she was 5 years old. She later took a few organ lessons from Mrs. Fruehling.

She said she remembers telling Fruehling that she got nervous when she was playing at church. People are also reading..
