The worst times to be on the roads this bank holiday have been revealed as millions of people in the UK prepare to head off on their long weekend getaways. Last year's late summer bank holiday saw more than 19 million people out on the roads, with this year expected to be just as busy - so people are being urged to think ahead before heading out. They said: “Public transport may be reduced on bank holidays, causing more people to rely on their cars for travel. “Therefore, it is important for those planning to drive over the long weekend to prepare and try to avoid getting caught up in congestion. "The worst times to travel during bank holidays are Friday between 10am and 7pm, Saturday between 10am and 3pm, and Sunday and Monday between 10am and 4pm.

" If you want to beat the traffic, make sure to start your journey early in the morning or late at night to avoid it. The best times to travel are Friday before 6am or later at night, after 10pm. Also, Saturday after 3pm, when most people have arrived at their destination already.

One of the other things drivers can do to avoid congestion is to pre-check their routes and see if there are alternatives with fewer cars, such as country roads instead of motorways.
