Pune: A 38-year-old woman from Kalepadal in Hadapsar lost Rs 9.75 lakh to cybercrooks in June in a bid to sell her home temple on an online market platform. Inspector (Crime) Nilesh Jagdale from Hadapsar Police on Tuesday said the crook contacted the woman after she posted an ad to sell the home temple for Rs 4,000.

He sent her a QR code, transferred Rs 2 into her bank account and asked her to make a 'nominal' money transfer of Rs 5,000 to establish a money transaction link as he was using a current account. Jagdale said the crook promised to return the money along with the payment for the home temple. He then sent her a video asking her to follow certain instructions.

The crook then gained the woman's confidence and persuaded her to make more money transfers to retrieve her money. The woman realised that she was duped after making money transfers worth over Rs 9 lakh. Initially, the woman filed a complaint on the central govt's cyber portal, which referred the complaint to the city cybercrime police for further action.

The cybercrime police later recorded her statement and conducted a preliminary inquiry. After verifying the complaint, cybercrime police referred the matter to the Hadapsar Police.
