Pune: A 19-year-old science student sustained an injury on his shoulder after being attacked in broad daylight with a machete by two men and robbed of his gold chain worth Rs70,000 on Hanuman Tekdi off Senapati Bapat (SB) Road. The incident occurred between 2.50pm and 3.

15pm on Sunday, when the victim and his friend were waiting near a pagoda atop the hill for their other friends to join and celebrate the birthday of a group member by cutting a cake. The other two friends were to reach there with the cake and snacks. "At this point, two men emerged from behind the pagoda.

One of them was wielding a machete — he threatened the victim and attacked him to snatch his gold chain, while his accomplice slapped both friends. The attackers then told the two students to immediately leave the place," senior inspector Girisha Nimbalkar of the Deccan Gymkhana police told TOI. The shocked students came down to the foothills, where they met and narrated the incident to their other friends, who had reached the spot.

The group went up the hill again to check if the assailants were still there, but they had fled, Nimbalkar said. The injured student later lodged a complaint with the Deccan Gymkhana police. This is the second incident of its kind since Sept 29, when four armed men attacked and robbed two students of valuables worth Rs20,000 on Baner Tekdi.
