Decades ago, flying between Europe and Australia meant multi-stop itineraries that took dozens of hours, even days, to complete. For example, in 1947 when Qantas was operating its famous ‘Kangaroo Route connecting Australia with the United Kingdom, the airline flew from Sydney to London with seven stops with a Lockheed Constellation - this included stops in Darwin, Australia, Singapore, Calcutta (Kolkata), India, Karachi, Pakistan, Cairo, Egypt, Tripoli, Libya, and Rome, Italy. Now, the Australian airline offers several ways to fly directly to Europe, mainly via Perth Airport (PER).

While it has axed the domestic leg of flight QF9, which was a convenient way for passengers to stay on a single aircraft while flying from Melbourne Airport (MEL) to London Heathrow Airport (LHR), it has continued serving Europe via Perth. However, Qantas is not the only airline that offers direct or one-stop flights from Australia to Europe, with British Airways and Turkish Airlines complementing the Australian carrier’s route network that connects the two continents. Qantas’ European network A common denominator of Qantas’ European network was the fact that the Australian airline has scheduled flights to only two airports in Europe in October: London Heathrow Airport (LHR) and Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport (CDG).
