Ash has shot out of Whakaari/White Island setting up photo opportunities against a beautiful morning sunrise. The “short period of sunrise ash emission” was also captured Geonet’s webcams. The science group set up to monitor earthquakes and volcanoes said Whakaari has been emitting “an almost continuous stream and gas plume” in recent weeks.

However, this morning’s plume posed “no risk to the mainland” Bay of Plenty coastline. It said the ash fall didn’t extend much beyond the island’s coast..
