A new brewery is opening on James Island this week. The large facility, from the operators of two well-known West Ashley taprooms, joins Fam’s Brewing Co., the only brewery on James Island.

Charles Towne Fermentory , revered for thoughtfully crafted beers like the Sungazer IPA, has added a third Charleston location just off Folly Road near Bohemian Bull. It opens at noon Sept. 21.

The brewery’s expansion comes as others have closed.

Brewlab, Tradesman Brewing Co . and Fatty’s Beer Works all shuttered peninsula taprooms this year. Charles Towne Fermentory co-owner Adam Goodwin said their decision to open on James Island came out of a need for more production space.

With the lease at the Avondale location set to expire soon, the new outpost also provides Charles Towne Fermentory stability for the future, Goodwin said. He also recognizes the opportunity this largely untapped market presents.
