WEBB CITY, Mo. — Webb City saw its season come to a close at the Cardinal Dome Saturday afternoon as it fell 3-1 to Jefferson City in a Class 4 state quarterfinal volleyball game. The Jefferson City Jays (26-7) earned the first set with a 25-20 victory.
Webb City came back to claim the second set 25-21. But things seemed to swing heavily in favor of Jefferson City after that. "We were a little more slow-footed.
We kind of got out of the gameplan and stopped being aggressive. We were too worried about what they were doing to us," Webb City head coach Rhonda Lawrence said about the third set. The Cardinals (28-9-1) watched a 6-1 deficit grow to 17-9 and eventually 22-11.
They tried to claw back into it behind three straight service aces from senior Mia Lenker but eventually fell 25-20. Lenker also had a kill late in the set to help the effort. The fourth set was either tied or the Cardinals led all the way until the Jays got the advantage at 19-18.
The Jays even trailed 17-13 but rallied to score 12 of the last 15 points to win the set and game. "Volleyball's a game of runs and a game of points and you want to make sure you're on the right side of the runs," Jefferson City coach Ali Eskens said. "It's heartbreaking, heart-wrenching," Lawrence said of the late run for Jefferson City.
"With the rotation we were in, we struggled and they were taking advantage of that the whole time. That's volleyball. It's unfortunate but that's how it works.
