Saturday, August 31, 2024 Malarikkal in Kottayam is gaining attention once again as the water lilies have begun to bloom, attracting visitors from all over Kerala. The Malarikkal Tourism Society revealed that last year, the region earned over Rs 1 crore within just three months. The income came from parking fees, the sale of flowers, and boat travel charges, with the figures compiled based on local residents’ information, showcasing the direct benefits to the community.

The Malarikkal Water Lily Festival spans from August to mid-October, with peak blooming expected until September 30. Visitors can enjoy boat tours through the fields until October 15, with 120 boats officially registered with the Malarikkal Tourism Society.The local panchayat has set a fee of Rs 100 per person per hour, with an additional charge of Rs 1000 for longer trips that explore more extensive areas.

These water lilies flourish in the expansive 950-acre Thiruvaykkari polders of J Block 9000 and the 1800-acre Thiruvarppu Panchayat. After the annual harvest, the waterlogged fields transform into a picturesque scene filled with blooming lilies, which only bloom once annually. Paddy cultivation resumes from mid-October to March.
