It surely wasn’t the Christmas gift Vélez Sarsfield fans wanted: head coach Gustavo Quinteros announced on Wednesday he’s leaving the team after a single season in charge. The club confirmed the news, after negotiations to extend the coach’s deal into 2025 failed. “Farewell, Gustavo! The Argentine football champion’s coach decided not to renew his contract with the club.
All the best!,” Vélez published on its Instagram account. Minutes later, a video recorded by Quinteros himself was shared across outlets devoted entirely to the club. In the footage, the coach explained his reasons and thanked the Fortín fans.
“A lot of lies were told recently,” said the 59-year-old coach, who also won titles in Chile, Ecuador, and Bolivia. “The club has certain goals and needs, and so do I as a coach. In truth, after meeting these days we have been unable to reach an agreement.
” He went on to thank Vélez president Fabián Berlanga, manager Ricky Álvarez, the board of directors, fans, and players for the support during his stint. During his year helming the first division team, he won the Liga Profesional and reached the final of the Copa de la Liga and the Copa Argentina. Quinteros also managed to qualify Vélez to the 2025 Copa Libertadores.
“We wrapped up a wonderful season, putting Vélez Sarsfield where it deserves to be, at the top of it all and winning a title. I’m hurt, because I love this club, and I hope this is not a goodbye but a see you soon,.
