Thiruvananthapuram : The work on the first phase of widening Vazhayila-Nedumangad road into four lanes is likely to commence in Oct. This phase, stretching from Vazhayila to Keltron Junction including a proposed flyover at Karakulam, is awaiting state cabinet’s approval. The final go-ahead is pending due to the project’s bid exceeding the estimated cost by 17%, prompting a govt review.
The project file is currently under consideration in the chief minister’s office (CMO). Compensation for 60 landowners affected by this phase has already been completed. A senior revenue official involved in the project confirmed that the tender has been awarded to Kochi-based Cherian Varkey Constructions Ltd but is still under state govt’s review.
“The file is with the CMO. The decision was postponed due to the recent Wayanad tragedy, but the project is likely to receive cabinet approval anytime from now. This will allow the process on the first phase, including the Karakulam flyover, to begin in Sep,” said an official.
Meanwhile, a tender worth Rs 60 lakh for the demolition of buildings in the first phase has been awarded, with the work expected to start next month. The official noted that compensation for 60 landowners has been disbursed, but a few payments remain pending due to issues such as unclear documentation or owners residing abroad. These are expected to be resolved soon.
