Department of Travel has issued a cautionary notice for American tourists planning to visit Chile. A Level 2 travel advisory has been released, urging US citizens to remain vigilant due to ongoing "robberies and assaults" in Santiago's metropolitan area, which includes the vicinity of Santiago International Airport, Valparaiso, and Vina del Mar. The security alert, dated September 10, advises travelers to stay alert and aware in public spaces.

Tourists are advised to be wary of pickpockets when visiting locations such as Persa Bio Bio, Santiago's largest market; Cerro Santa Lucia, Santiago's historic center; and Estacion Mapoco, a former train station now serving as a cultural hub, among other places. The travel advisory recommends maintaining a low profile in public and avoiding solo ventures, particularly after dark. It suggests traveling in groups, even in well-lit areas.

As per data from the Chilean government, the first half of 2024 saw 137,644 thefts and 55,563 robberies reported in the country. This is a decrease compared to the same period last year, which recorded 143,897 thefts and 95,303 robberies. The security alert strongly advises against physically resisting any robbery attempts.

The US Department of Travel also recommends that travelers avoid displaying "excessive jewelry, electronics and carrying and flash.
