Homeowners and residents are being warned about a silent killer inside their homes which could lead to serious illness or even death. Local authorities and fire services are urging people to get carbon monoxide detectors installed inside their properties before things are too late. Among those issuing the safety reminder ahead of Gas Safety Week is Essex County Fire and Rescue Service , which is concerned about the dangers of carbon monoxide.

The gas is undetectable by sight, smell or taste and can be potentially fatal if you become poisoned. The fire service is asking people with gas boilers, appliances, open fires or log burners to ensure they have a working carbon monoxide detector inside their home. Failure to do so could lead to serious problems.

Essex fire service live safe manager Claire Monk said: "Carbon monoxide poisoning is potentially fatal and even inhaling low levels of the gas can cause lasting damage to your health. "That's why it's important that we support and raise awareness during Gas Safety Week to educate our communities on how to maintain their gas appliances in their homes and understand the signs and symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning if a gas appliance becomes faulty at any time. "We offer free carbon monoxide alarms to vulnerable residents in Essex.

If you are a vulnerable resident or know someone who is, please get in touch by booking a home safety visit." The service also asks residents to be aware of the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, .
