Gardeners are being warned that their hydrangeas may not bloom next year if they make a certain mistake. The colourful and pretty floral shrubs are very popular due to their beauty and ease of care. This time of year is the best time to prune climbing hydrangeas - which often cover walls, fences or trees.

Pruning is when you selectively remove parts of a plant but it tends to be overlooked in the summer when flowers are in full bloom. Most hydrangeas need to be pruned in spring - except climbing hydrangeas , which need pruning during the summer months. According to one gardening expert, if you 'mess up' pruning your climbing hydrangeas, you might not even get flowers next year.

He said: "Mess up pruning your climbing hydrangea, and you could end up with no flowers next year, so this is how to do it correctly." In one video, he explained the correct way to prune climbing hydrangeas. He said they must be 'pruned immediately' after flowering in the summertime.

Michael said: "Most flowers appear towards the top of the plant, so try to leave that as un-pruned as possible. "You can still remove the faded flower heads, cut back any dead.
