Covid is making a concerning comeback as world health experts issue the latest warning over the KP 3.1.1 .

Almost 3,000 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus were recorded in England in the week ending July 31, the UKHSA has said, with numbers having crept up since the spring. It comes as the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a clear warning this week, revealing more than 40 athletes at the Olympic Village in Paris had tested positive. Swimming champion Adam Peaty was among the athletes to test positive, while US sprinter Noah Lyles revealed he also tested positive shortly before clinching the 200m bronze, saying the virus "definitely" affected his performance.

Addressing journalists in Geneva this week, consultant Dr Maria Van Kerkhove said that data across more than 80 countries showed case numbers were rising worldwide, and had been doing so for "several weeks". The consultant said: “Data from our sentinel-based surveillance system across 84 countries reports that the per cent of positive tests for SARS-CoV-2 has been rising over several weeks. “Overall, test positivity is above 10 per cent, but this fluctuates per region.

In Europe, per cent positivity is above 20 per cent.” She added: “In recent months, regardless of the season, many countries have experienced surges of Covid-19, including at the Olympics where at least 40 athletes have tested positive.” The KP 3.
