The Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra officially starts its 83rd season with "Iconic Broadway" on Oct. 24 and 25 but before that season kickoff show, orchestra fans will celebrate at a special gala on Sept. 27.

An evening of dancing, cocktails, dinner and silent auction will be highlights for the Big Band gala starring Doug Horne and the Rhythm Makers Orchestra on Sept. 27 at The Center for Visual and Performing Arts in Munster. The show will features sounds of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s.

"We thought we'd go back to the '20s, '30s and '40s," said Kirk Muspratt, conductor/music director of Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra. "That music is very cool. It's something different than what we've done in the past.

" He said people will be encouraged to dance at the gala which will feature excellent big band tunes. Muspratt said the entire season will be a varied one. "People ask us for an eclectic season," he said.

He said seasons with varied programs are not only great for audiences but also for the orchestra's members. It's a pleasure for them to play eclectic compositions. The 2024-25 season kicks off with a night of Broadway music with two performances October 24 & 25 at 7:30pm.

The Symphony will be joined by the Symphony Chorus as well as guest singers Alisa Jordheim, Kimberly E. Jones, Lorenzo Parnell, and Jonathan Wilson. The concert will feature favorite tunes from classic musicals like Sound of Music, Oklahoma, South Pacific, and The Music Man, and contemporary musicals.
