Pune: Two unknown men stole Rs15.81 lakh cut the cash dispenser of a white label automated teller machine (ATM) with a gas cutter at Vasuli Phata in Khed taluka on Saturday early morning. The theft surfaced when a woman residing in the building woke up after sensing a fire where the ATM was kept.

Assistant commissioner of police Rajendrasingh Gour of the Pimpri Chinchwad police said, “The ATM kiosk was unmanned and was in a small shop. The shutter was locked at night,” Gour said. The thieves first broke the locks of the shutter by using the gas cutter and gained entry inside.

“They cut the machine with the gas cutter. During the process, the plastic parts of the machine caught fire,” Gour said. The officer said that by that time, the suspects had taken the cash from the trays of the machine and fled.

Gour said the fire damaged the machine too, which was worth Rs 4 lakh. “The officials of the company informed the police that there was Rs 15.81 lakh in the machine,” Gour said.

He said the police have recovered the CCTV footage from the neighbourhood. “We are working on some clues,” the officer said.
