Pune: An unemployed engineer (24) from Udgir in Latur district was detained by the Pimpri Chinchwad police early on Thursday morning in Thergaon, on charges of making a hoax call to the police control room claiming a threat to Prime Minister Narendra Modi 's life. The PM was initially scheduled to visit the city to inaugurate a new Pune Metro line and other development works on Thursday afternoon. After receiving the call around 6.
45am, the police swung into action and traced the caller to a bus stop in Thergaon, from where he was detained around 7am. Later, the PM's visit was cancelled, citing a heavy rainfall warning for the city. Senior inspector NB Kolhatkar of the Wakad police told TOI, "The unemployed man told us during his questioning that he was on a visit to Pune in search of a job and was going through some AI generated information on his cellphone's Internet browser, when he came across some matter allegedly suggesting a threat to the PM's life.
The man then made the call to the police, claiming that the PM's life was under threat, and he needed the police's help." Kolhatkar added that the police have registered a non-cognizable (NC) offence against the man. "We are questioning him," the officer said.
