Pune: The Shirur police on Sunday arrested two 20-year-old men, including a college student, and recovered five country-made pistols and four cartridges from them. A police team led by inspector Sandesh Kenjale took the duo into custody. "Both men hail from Ahmednagar district.

Of them, Aniket Gavane , has a body offence case filed against him," superintendent of police Pankaj Deshmukh (Pune Rural) said. He said Gavane and his student accomplice had smuggled the pistols worth Rs20,000 each from Sendhwa in Barwani district in Madhya Pradesh. "They had planned to sell the firearms in Pune and Ahmednagar districts," Deshmukh added.

Inspector Kenjale said Gavane was working in an eatery at Shrigonda taluka in the district and both accused are family friends. "Once when a bed sheet seller from Punjab had come to the eatery carrying a sharp weapon, he learnt about the firearms manufacturers in Madhya Pradesh from the latter. The duo were planning to sell them at double the price," Kenjale said.
