Prayagraj : The water level of rivers Ganga and Yamuna on Wednesday continued to swell, giving sleepless nights to residents living in the low-lying areas of the city. The water level of the river Yamuna is rising rapidly compared to its Ganga. Officials of the flood control department admitted that the water level of Ganga at Chhatnag and Yamuna at Naini rose up to 16 and 26 cm in the past four hours only.
While the water level of Ganga was rising at a slow pace at Phaphamau, it was increasing at an alarming pace at Chhatnag and Naini. Officials, however, claimed that the rising trend of the twin rivers would not impose a major impact as the flood water was being released in both rivers in small amounts and phases. Officials also claimed that there was no need to worry for residents as the floodwater would pass through the city within two or three days.
The residents of more than a dozen localities, including Ganga Nagar, Newada, Draupadi Ghat, Chota Baghara, and adjoining areas, are once again apprehensive and keeping a strict watch on the level. By 8 am, the water level of Ganga at Phaphamau, Chhatnag, and Yamuna at Naini was 79.61, 79.
