Thiruvananthapuram : One more person has been identified with amoebic meningoencephalitis in the district on Tuesday, taking the total number of cases reported from the state capital to five, sources said. The sample report of Vijith (40), from Peroorkada, received on Tuesday found him to be positive for the amoebic infection, sources added. He has been admitted to the medical college hospital.

Earlier, four cases were reported from Nellimoodu near Neyyattinkara. The district health administration, which has found the source of the infection from a pond in Nellimoodu, is yet to trace the source of infection of Vijith. The district health administration informed that Vijith’s details couldn’t be collected as his condition is not stable.

Besides Akhil, who died on July 23, the three others from Nellimoodu under treatment are Aneesh (24), Hareesh (23), Dhanush (26). The health department had collected water samples from the pond at Nellimoodu and had sent it for testing. Akhil and the others had bathed at Kavinkulam near Kannaravila at Nellimoodu, under the Athiyannoor grama panchayat.

Bathing in the pond has now been strictly prohibited as per health department instructions, and a notice board has been erected to inform the public. Following this, the health department has issued an alert in the district. The authorities have asked the people not to bathe in stagnant water and also in contaminated water sources.
