The show, starring Michael Sheen and Ruth Wilson , fictionalises the events of the legendary television interview between Emily Maitlis and Prince Andrew . The pair sat down for Newsnight in 2019 to discuss the accusations Prince Andrew faced regarding his involvement with Jeffrey Epstein and Virginia Giuffre.
Emily herself served as an executive producer on the show to give her useful insider tidbits about the events leading up to the interview - and the interview itself. Ruth Wilson got to know her real-life counterpart by not only spending a huge amount of time with her, but also “interviewing” Emily. And Ruth found out all sorts of juicy facts - from what her favourite sweet is, to the contents of her handbag.
“Emily eats a lot of percy pigs,” reveals Ruth. “And Emily’s bag is covered in ink. I was going to put my name in it ‘Ruth was ‘ere’” because she lent me her bag for the show.
So I carry her real bag which is amazing.” Ruth also goes into detail about one scene where she puts rollers in her hair before going onto the set of Newsnight. �.
