Thursday, September 19, 2024 Tipperary County Council has announced plans to temporarily close a portion of the R494 road for several days in October 2024. The section of the road to be closed stretches from the junction at R496-13 (Roolagh) to the Birdhill roundabout in County Tipperary. The closure will be enforced nightly from 8 p.

m. to 5 a.m.

, starting on Thursday, October 10, and continuing until Sunday, October 20, 2024. This closure is expected to impact both local residents and travelers passing through the area, and the council has laid out alternative routes to ensure minimal disruption. During these hours, traffic will be rerouted via clearly marked diversions.

Local access, however, will still be facilitated for those needing to reach destinations within the closed-off section. The road closure is primarily aimed at facilitating necessary maintenance and improvements on the R494 road, a key route in the region. Drivers traveling from Birdhill will be redirected onto the R-445-8 and will then turn left onto R-496-0 at Ayrestown to continue towards Ballina.

For those traveling from Ballina, the diversion will take them onto the R-496-13/0 before turning right onto the R-445-8 towards Birdhill village. These diversions have been planned to minimize disruption and ensure that traffic flows smoothly despite the closure. To make the transition easier for drivers, the council will ensure that all diversions are clearly signposted.
